Traveling with your pets does not have to be stressful. Some cats and dogs naturally do better than others, all depending on their unique personalities and past experiences. Our pets can experience a great deal of fear and anxiety when traveling, however basic planning and advanced preparations can guarantee a fun and safe vacation for you and your animals. When preparing your pet for a trip, keep these few things in mind: use pet restraints, practice your travel routines, make time for potty & play and be detailed & thorough in packing for your pet.
Pet restraints not only help us keep track of our animals but they can also help keep our pets safe. Whether you are driving, flying or taking a train, pet restraints are a must.
The safest way for your cat or dog to travel in a car or on an airplane is in a crate. Crates help provide a little more protection and can help to shield your pet in an accident. Crates can also help animals feel safe and secure, reducing any anxiety or fear they may have. If you are flying, check with your airline on any specific crate requirements they may have. You will want to choose crates made for travel that are easy to transport and provide enough space for your pet to stand up and turn around in.
Some dogs do great without a leash, when they are at home in a familiar environment. Just like people, animals can react or behave differently than expected in new and unfamiliar environments. For the safety of your pet and others around them, harness and leash your dogs when in public spaces.
Practice, practice, practice! Start practicing various travel routines with your pet a few weeks in advance. Help your cat and dog get comfortable with various scenarios so that nothing is new and surprising to them.
It can be easy to get caught up in managing our own schedules (transportation logistics and entertainment) when we are traveling, especially if it is for a fun vacation, and forget about our pets schedules. Our cats and dogs need to have bathroom breaks and play breaks throughout the day just as they would at home. Making time to take your dogs for a quick walk outside or set up a travel litter box for your cat can help keep them comfortable and prevent accidents in the hotel and other unwanted venues.
Play time is also important when traveling. Traveling can be very stressful for our animals, whether it is their first time or they are seasoned travelers. Traveling is a break from their normal daily routine creating a bit of anxiety and uncertainty for them. Giving them as much of their “normal routine” as you can, will help reduce their anxiety and fear of travel. Play time provides some normalcy and allows them to get some exercise and release pent up energy.
Getting ready for a successful trip requires planning and packing ahead of time. Many pet owners may not realize that their pets need the same time and attention to detail with packing as they do. Some of the essentials for pets include: pet identification & shot records, pet food & water and a pet friendly travel kit.
Our pets should always have a form of identification by microchip or collar with an ID tag. This is especially important when traveling with our animals. If your cat or dog gets lost during your travels, having quick visible identification can help to reunite you with them quicker. Verify that your pet’s identification tag has their name, your name and your current phone number. Several large retailers carry specialized tags machines that make getting an updated pet ID tag quick and easy.
Some hotels, Airbnb and entertainment venues may require shot records (especially rabies certificate) for your pet in order for them to be welcome on site. Make sure your cat and dogs are up to date with their vaccines and make a copy of their shot record to bring with you on your trip. You should always call locations in advance to verify their pet policies.
While this may seem as an obvious addition to your pet’s suitcase, it can oftentimes be overlooked. Chances are many of the places you're traveling will have local stores nearby that sell specific pet food and your hotel will have water. If your pet is used to a certain brand or type of food, switching to something else could upset their stomach and cause both of you a lot of trouble on your trip. Your best bet is to pack enough food for your cat or dog that they are used to eating.
If you are camping, hiking or boating where you do not have easy access to fresh water, you will need to ensure you pack enough water for your pet to keep them hydrated. Don’t forget some portable food and water dishes!
