Providing real food is one small thing we can do as pet parents to support a healthy lifestyle for our animals. Our pets' food affects them short term on a daily basis and long term over the span of their lives. There is no industry standard in place to label any pet food as “clean”. There are however some general tips and guidelines to follow to achieve clean eating habits.
Clean eating is one way to achieve a nutrient dense diet and promote a healthy lifestyle.
Eating “clean” can be defined as eating whole unprocessed foods that do not contain artificial ingredients. Selecting these simple foods eliminates refined grains, added sugars, saturated fats and trans fats. The purpose of eating clean whole foods or limited ingredient foods is to cut out fillers and substances that do not have a positive impact on your overall health. The goal is to provide your body with the nutrients it needs to function and thrive on a daily basis.
Clean eating for dogs and cats is no different. Recently pet owners have begun to realize the importance of their pets' food and the impact it has on their overall health. We love our pets and try to do as much as we can to ensure they live a long happy and healthy life. Our pets can adopt clean eating habits and still enjoy their food.
There are no downsides of a clean diet for your pet. Whole foods that are high in protein, vitamins and minerals, provide the energy our cats and dogs need for their active lifestyles. Nutrient dense diets also have a positive impact on their skin and their coats. Healthier skin and shinier coats are a good indicator that your pet is getting the nutrients they need. Selecting unprocessed (or minimally processed) foods that are organic or natural and have limited ingredients can also be easier for your pet to digest.
There is a wide variety of foods, treats and supplements available on the market for our cats and dogs. Understanding nutrition labels can help when selecting their food. Some things to look for on your dog and cat food labels include:
Organic foods are grown without artificial pesticides, fertilizers, or herbicides. Organic meat is free of hormones or antibiotics. Natural foods are free of synthetic or artificial ingredients and additives.
Dog foods and treats with limited ingredients have a focus on real food with vital nutrients. Animal protein (chicken, beef, salmon), brown rice and sweet potatoes are some of the more commonly found whole ingredients in pet food that are important in a dog’s diet.
Raw pet food is real, natural ingredients, never cooked and minimally processed. Raw dog and cat food can be homemade, store-bought, freeze-dried, or dehydrated. This food option can be made with several different foods including: raw eggs, ground or whole bone, muscle and organ meats, pet safe fresh fruits and vegetables and dairy products like yogurt.
Keeping our furry family members happy, and healthy is the ultimate goal as a pet parent. Our animals rely on us to care for them in the best possible way we can. We may not always have time to go on a walk or get down and play throughout the day, but with the right foods, we can make sure we are
giving our pets good nutrition for their well-being.
