You’ve heard that hemp products will help your pet and you are ready to purchase some, but
there are so many options on the shelf you do not know where to begin. With such a wide
selection of different products it is tough to figure out exactly which one to try out and the
whole process can become stressful. Don’t panic! We have some helpful tips for what to look
for in a hemp product and how to decide what type of product is best for your pet.
Make sure the product contains CBD and that the company proves it.
Something you should look for first is the whether or not the product contains CBD. A few
indicators that a product does contain CBD are ingredients like Broad Spectrum Hemp Extract, Full Spectrum Hemp Extract, CBD, or PCR Hemp Extract.
If the product only mentions hemp or just mentions hemp seed, then chances are the product does not contain any CBD at all, whatsoever.
There is a way that companies can prove there is CBD in their product is by offering products on their website. Most companies list their website on their packaging and will have a test result portion of their website.
Where is the Hemp Sourced?
It is important to ask where the hemp a company puts in its products come from. To be 100%
certain you are getting a quality product, look for companies that only purchase their hemp
from USA growers. USA hemp is the highest quality on the market. Hemp from countries other than the United States do not follow the same growing practices and quality control procedures that ensure a safe and effective product for your pet.
Is the hemp organically grown?
It is important to purchase hemp that is grown with organic farming methods. This means that the plants are grown without harmful pesticides and chemicals.
Broad Spectrum vs Full Spectrum vs Isolate
First of all what do these terms mean?
Broad spectrum means there are other cannabinoids in the product besides CBD like CBC, CBG, or CBN, but there is no THC (the psychoactive cannabinoid that gives the high feeling that cannabis is famous for).
Full Spectrum means that the product has all the cannabinoids that the hemp plant contains including THC.
Isolate means that the product only contains CBD and no other cannabinoid produced by the hemp plant.
Broad Spectrum and Full Spectrum products are more effective than Isolates because the minor cannabinoids in these extracts enhance the effects of the CBD. The synergy between minor cannabinoids and CBD is often called the entourage effect. There has not been any studies that show whether Broad Spectrum or Full Spectrum products are more effective, but if the presence of THC worries you, go with a Broad Spectrum product that is free of THC.
How is Product Extracted?
Hemp Extracts can be made with several different methods including CO2, Ethanol, Methanol or Butane. CO2 is definitely the safest extraction method as the others use solvents that would not be good for your pet if ingested. Although most extracts that use other methods are free of their solvents due to filtration and purification processes, it’s safest to not use any harmful solvents in the first place.
What type of product would be easiest to give my pet?
Pets can be very particular. Some pets like oils, some cannot stand them, some like chews, and others will turn their nose at them. Taking your pet’s preferences into account is critical when choosing the right hemp product. If your dog is picky, I would suggest you try a soft chew first as they are very palatable and effective. They are also very easy to dose and generally less expensive than oils.
If you want a more multifunctional product, purchase an oil. There are many ways to administer an oil. Make sure that there are clear marks on the dropper so that you can dose properly. Also, if you spend more on a higher concentration bottle, for instance a 500 mg bottle, you will get a better value than you will with a soft chew.
How much will this cost me?
Once you know how much CBD is in a product, look at the price. Some product will give you a significantly better deal on the amount CBD that you are buying than others. Make sure you divide the cost of the product by the amount of CBD in the product so that you know how much you are paying per mg of CBD.
More expensive does not mean better especially if the hemp is from the USA, organically
grown, broad spectrum & CO2 extracted. Make sure you aren’t paying too much!
